Sony Mobile expands its Xperia line again with two new entry-level handsets, the Xperia tipo and the dual-SIM variant Xperia tipodual. The tipo is designed to be easy to use and is targeted at consumers who may be getting their first smartphone. They is powered by a Qualcomm SnapDragon MSM7225A 800MHz processor and 512MB RAM, and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS pre-loaded with a custom UI, a dedicated set-up guide for first time user, and a data usage monitor app. Though both phones are a mere tentative step from a back-to-basics feature phone, they do come preloaded with the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, despite the dinky form factor – a mere 103 x 57 x 13mm

Nearly one in three who bought a smartphone in the past six months snapped up an Android handset, according to a new survey from Nielsen, leaving the iPhone and BlackBerry handsets to battle it out for second place. Android app root kit steal private data from smartphones

Spider Labs has released a root kit that could potentially allow hackers to access emails and text messages on Android-based smartphones. “It wasn’t difficult to build,” said Spider Labs chief Nicholas Percoco, who told Reuters the kit had been coded in just two weeks. “[Of course,] there are people who are much more motivated to do these things than we are. “[But] we could be doing what we want to do and there is no clue that we are there.” Percoco also claimed the root kit – which was tested on HTC’s Legend and Desire smartphones – was coded in a noble effort to “persuade” Google that it should fix the critical vulnerab
