Opera Introduce New Touch-Based Web Browser ‘Opera for Tablets

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 20:57 No Comments

Opera Software has announced a new touch-based web browser designed especially for tablets. The company plans to demo the new web browser at the Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas. For now, you’ll have to get by with this (very short) video preview: The focus is, obviously, on the touch screen interface and the demo looks and behaves much like Mobile Safari for the iPad, except that in this case the browser is running on an Android tablet. Although Opera is calling the browser Opera for Tablets, it seems safe to assume that it won’t be making its way onto the iPad any time soon. Apple’s app guidelines prevent software from executing its own code. That means JavaSc

Opera Mini boasts one million iPhone downloads in a single day

Friday, April 16, 2010 2:08 1 Comment

Opera has confirmed that its Mini iPhone browser was downloaded more than one million times during the first day of its availability. Unsurprisingly, Opera Mini is currently the number one iPhone app in the 22 featured Apple App Stores, as of 8 a.m. CET on Thursday, April 15, 2010. As TG Daily previously reported, the company submitted its browser to Apple on March 23, following the unveiling of Opera on iPhone during the Mobile World Congress, CTIA and SXSW. Initial Mini previews were met with positive reviews, with the browser offering a significant speed increase (especially on congested networks) via advanced Web-page compression techniques to keep roaming and pay-per-MB cost

Opera has officially asked Apple to approve its Mini browser for the iPhone. But what are the chances of Club Cupertino giving a thumbs up to a competing application? The browser – which was first unveiled at the 2010 Mobile World Congress – has already received positive reviews for its ability to “power through” Web pages six times faster than Apple’s Safari. “Due to server-side rendering, Mini compresses data by up to 90 percent before sending it to the phone, resulting in rapid page loading and more Web per MB for the end user,” Opera explained in an official statement. “Those familiar with iPhone roaming charges will relish Opera Mi

Opera more than doubles download numbers in Europe after Choice Screen introduction

Opera says it’s more than doubled its browser downloads following Microsoft’s forced introduction of the Choice Screen in Europe. Late last year, Microsoft struck a deal with European anti-trust regulators under which it would add a pop-up screen listing alternatives to its own Explorer browser, and including links to their installation pages. Since the screen was introduced, says Opera, more than half the European downloads of the latest version, Opera 10.50, come directly from the Choice Screen. “This confirms that when users are given a real choice on how they choose the most important piece of software on their computer, the browser, they will try out alternat

Opera Software today rolled out a native version of Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile 5- and 6-based handsets. The beta version provides integration of Opera Mini with the Windows Mobile platform. “Opera is able to deliver an optimized version of the popular Opera Mini browser that dramatically improves performance and the overall user experience,’’ a company press release said. The Opera Mini will work on any Windows Mobile phone, as it does not requires Java. The Opera Mini 5 beta for Windows Mobile includes the same rich feature set as the Java-based version, the company said. Such features as tabbed browsing, password manager, bookmarks and Speed Dial, are built-in. One of Oper
